John Bos II Part 4,  1880s

John Bos II mini-pedigree from Ancestry.com

1880

24 March 1880, age 25

Birth of son Christian

His son Christian Johannes Bos was born on 24 March 1880 in Arnhem, Gelderland, Netherlands.  This was his second of eight children born.  He would immigrate with his parents, marry Francine Kaufers or Kamps or Kemps.  He must have moved his family with his parents because he died in Island County Washington in 1946.  He has never fought in any war according to the 1930 census, although there is a WWII draft card with his signature on it (bonus points).
Perhaps I am wrong in assuming he met and married Frances in Montana.  Nope, I was wrong.  I found a marriage certificate showing they were married 1905 in King, Washington.  By the 1940 census, he was a gas station attendant at his son Charles' station.

Federal Census -- silly me.  I'm over here looking for an 1880 census for this man, but he didn't arrive until next year.  No wonder I cannot find a census prior to 1900.  As we will see in a future post, the 1890 census was actually taken, but it burned 99% in a massive fire.  What a shame.

    • Originally discovered by the Royal Navy it was also visited by James Cook (in 1769) and William Bligh (in 1788). Its earliest European settlers helped the Pomare family achieve a rulership over the island. These settlers have brought Christianity with them, and the Pomares ruled until Pomare V gave it to France (after which it became a French colony) (Pearson, 2017).

1881

Arrival of the Bos Family

He arrived in 1881 according to the 1910 census, and in 1882 according to the 1900 and 1920 censuses.  Will need to see if I can find naturalization records.  Which I did, but only the petition to naturalize.  I don't know exactly when he was naturalized.  But a difference of about a year isn't too bad, now is it?

March 1881

James A. Garfield is elected the 20th President of the United States.

He served from March 1881 until he was assassinated six and a half months later.  He was the first sitting member of Congress to be elected to the presidency, and remains the only sitting House member to gain the White House (Wikipedia -- Garfield, 2018).
